Designer Ellis Yu’s launch of 71 STANTON for Pre-Fall 2011 is nothing short of a life-long dream. She’s dreamt of fashion and clothing since her weekly movie nights with her mom as a little girl watching classic films such as “My Fair Lady” and “Roman Holiday.”
“Growing up in Seoul and seeing the glamorous actresses of that era sparked my love affair with fashion,” says Ellis. “It made me see and appreciate aesthetics in a completely new way.”
71 STANTON is a name rooted in personal history for Ellis, the year she was born and the city in Orange County, CA where she lived after moving to the US in 1994.
“Creating this brand is a realization of a life-long dream,” says Ellis. “The name of the line reflects the beginning of where this journey started for me.”
After learning the high cost of design school for foreign students, undiscouraged, Ellis sought other opportunities to learn the skills and fundamentals of making a garment. She started working for a company handling everything from patternmaking to the intricacies of production.
“No matter what my design aspirations were, I knew I was just at my infancy,” says Ellis. “The only thing I could do was leap into the realities of what my dreams were and from that experience I received my education.”
Firmly grounded by her knowledge and background in manufacturing and production, Ellis started to craft her launch for 71 STANTON. The Pre-Fall 2011 debut collection perfectly showcases Ellis’ vision for the brand. 71 STANTON is a blend of the easiness of California style with a continental sophistication. The collection demonstrates this concept by using casual fabrics such as jersey and melding it with silk chiffon. The results, beautifully creates a light layering effect that could be worn by any modern woman.
